So the question is, how many people know what

means. what context it's used in, what it's based off of, etc?

Interesting little world we live in.

I know what it means. Sometimes a bit too well.

I also know that, contrary to what many believe, it is not an acronym, though some have given it...hmm...acronymical?...properties.

MUCK also isn't an acronym. Or at least it wasn't.

The lore I heard was the name was Maverick and it was shortned from that =)
Mar. 21st, 2005 06:49 pm (UTC)
Mav's original character name was Maverick, but he shortened it well before he became infamous.
Mar. 21st, 2005 06:48 pm (UTC)
Wrong; it wasn't on FurryMUCK.

The term "Mav" predates FurryMUCK, and goes back to the early tinymuds around before FurryMUCK.

In fact, I don't think Mav has ever BEEN on FurryMUCK.

(Yes, there have been characters named Mav since, but they aren't the original.)

It might have been Islandia, might have been one before that, even. I don't know for sure -- Islandia was before my time, pretty much. I started on PegasusMUCK and CaveMUCK, then came to FurryMUCK.

Oh, sweet. Actually, QuartzParadise was the very first I logged on.

I was also on TOSTrekMUSE for a while, I think I was a cute Vulcan named T'Lynn or something silly like that. Didn't play much.

I know its origins and what it means far too well. :>

I like to think that it means "my aim varies" :)

MUCK - Multi-User-Created Kingdom.

Mar. 21st, 2005 06:55 pm (UTC)
Wrong; this is an invented acronym. MUCK doesn't stand for anything; it was originally created as a tongue-in-cheek parallel to 'MUD', because of course TinyMUCKs are a type of TinyMUD. Likewise, TinyMUSH didn't mean anything.

They're just types of gooey squishy things.

Later, folks who thought they were clever sat around and made up retroactive acronyms for these things such as "Multi-User Created Kingdom" (wrong!) and "Multi-User Shared Hallucination" (also wrong!).

Of course, MUD does mean "Multi-User Dungeon" but a lot of users of tinymuds are irrationally afraid of that etymology.

Mis-Appropriated Verb -- an acronym used in the military
Mar. 21st, 2005 06:52 pm (UTC)
This is totally wrong. There's no such military term, and someone just made this up. Jurann stupidly stuck this in a "furry dictionary" one time and despite howls of protest from the people who were there at the time, including email from Mav himself, refused to change the entry.

There's no such thing as "mis-appropriated verb" and it doesn't even make sense as to why the military would use such a term, anyway -- nor is there any evidence of this phrase ever being used prior to its invention on muds.

Interesting. I heard it from someplace totally different. Although I forget from whom, now.
Mar. 21st, 2005 06:58 pm (UTC)
They're wrong too. You clearly didn't hear it from an old military person, I'd wager. You heard it from a MUCKer.
Mar. 21st, 2005 07:02 pm (UTC)
It's possible. It was a long time ago.
Mar. 21st, 2005 07:03 pm (UTC)
Interestingly, I first heard it when telling someone the origin listed above -- that it was named after Maverick... and I basically got shouted down over it.

I figured the more boring explanation was probably the correct one. :)

You should feel free to hunt down that person and shout them down in return. You were right the first time -- someone named Maverick (well, he went by Mav) went around mavving a lot, plain and simple.

(snerk) Jurann strikes again. I just mentioned him in my most recent posting.

It's good that there are a _few_ other people out there who have their facts straight. :)

The question should be, "Who here has ever interacted with the original Mav himself on a tinymud?"

So far, that would be me. Any other takers?

Is he still around on the game world somewhere? Anybody know?

Mav? He sometimes logs on DinoMUSH.
