RIP

Patrick "Furp" Reed (evil_dwagon) was killed by a drunk driver last night, while riding his motorcycle. Details are still coming in, but what we know so far is that he was riding his bike off-base near 29 Palms, California, when he was struck and killed by a drunk driver. The driver, a Marine, is in police (or Marine Corps) custody. We (Segue) found out in the wee hours of the morning (midnight-3am) as the event was unfolding, I found out this morning at 7 when one of my partners woke me up to pass on the news.

Furp was a friend and coworker, who I didn't know nearly well enough. He was always there at furry cons, bouncing around in his cheerful manner. We worked security together at Magfest. Everyone knew him. And now, he's gone.

I don't know yet if there will be a public memorial service, or where to send flowers, etc. Once I have that information I will post it here.

We hear stories all the time, of people killed by drunk drivers. For me, it's always been someone else's friend, or family, or neighbor, or coworker. It's always been someone whose name I had never heard before. This time, it's one of our own. It's only three hours after I passed word on to the furry community, and already there's 8 posts in my friends list, one on the Anthrocon web page, and topics set in IRC channels. This time, it's someone we ALL know.

I'm trying to find the right words to express... not how sad I am, because that's easy. Not how mad I am at the driver, because that's easy. I'm trying to find the words to say, to ask you all not to get behind the wheel of a car, while drunk. Every time this happens, every time someone is killed like this, we put out pleas to those we know, to not be the next drunk driver. It was bad enough, that we lost Furp this way. I hope I never have to find out that someone I know was the driver. Please.
