I own a couple of swords.  We won't get into why - if you know me, you know why.  Some people even know the 'why' for a couple specific swords.  That's not the point of this post.

I sometimes joke that I'd use the swords for self-defense, were someone to break into my house.

This evening, I heard a crash from beneath me - around the area of my kitchen.  A half moment later, I heard a thud.  In both cases, the floor vibrated a bit.  My first thought was "There's someone in my house."  I live alone, and have no pets.  So, what do I do?  I run to the bedroom door, grab a sword, and head downstairs to see what happened.

There's nothing there - whatever it was, was probably in the neighbor's house.  No problem.  However, I realized that using a sword for self defense in a townhouse is not very practical - there was no room to swing it effectively, had there been a need to do so.

Maybe a need a gun.

A sword is to a rifle like a dagger is to a pistol.

Don't ask me why I did this like a SAT standardized test question... I'm just in a weird mood tonight.

I like a double-barreled break-action 12-ga. shotgun for home defense. It only takes a couple seconds to load and you can use two different kinds of ammo at once. I like to use a round of birdshot and a round of buckshot; I call it "Hello, Goodbye."

I'd tend to lean toward just a standard pump action with an 18" barrel. Something like an 870HD, though with a similar load. 3 birdshot, 1 buckshot, or 2 and 2. Even with birdshot, though, there's the danger of going through thin townhouse walls.

Being more handgun oriented (right handed, left eye dominant makes long guns a lil more difficult to aim) I tend to keep the shotgun locked up in the locker.

You don't bring a knife to a gun fight! Not even one that big.

If you decide you want a gun take me shopping with you. I'm a total gun nut and for me a firearms store is like Toys R Us when you're six years old. :-)

A concealed carry in NC is a one day class, they serve barbecue for lunch.

How crazy is that.

Gun..
-Short barrel shotgun (pump, more than 2 shots)
-Pistol (revolver if preference)
-short submachine (u can get them in semi for legal purposes or get a mg class license).

Take a class so you don't shoot your foot or your neighbors thru the wall .

VA permit is easy, take a class (half day) and apply, 45 days later, comes in your mail.

May be take a self defence class and practice at the range A LOT.

Good luck.

my suggestion, as everyone has it seems, is to get a shotgun. however, unlike the 12 gauge, which has the chance of going through the divider wall between rooms and accidentally hitting someone you dont want to, my suggestion is to get a 20' gauge pump action shotgun, its small, and ANY shotgun has alot of stopping power. plus, in VA if someone breaks into your home and you shoot them, but they were unarmed, you can still be charged with manslaughter. a 20 guage is unlikely to kill, but it will defiantly stop them. also, dont be surprised if you shoot someone that they fall forward. its a reflex of the stomach muscles to tighten when they get hit. so uh, keep your distance =)

May I recommend a .410 shotgun? Don't kill, just constantly pepper them with tiny chunks of bismuth shot or rock salt.

Yeah but there is nothing like the big racking sound of a 12 :P it translates in english to ..."i`m going to fuck you up, if you dont get out NOW"

and the destruction power is just beautiful. Plus if someone is in your house, I like them well dead done side and side.

Non of the wounding nonsense. Specially if they r high, they will come after you even if you rip a leg off !

No, you take the sword and use it like an epee, thrust, not swing. :3

Or you get a sword with a blade like mine, that'll slice through just about anything in it's path. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f349/khyberkitsune/Picture.jpg

Dont bring a knife to a gunfight.

And nothing works better for scaring the piss out of a burglar like a Mossberg over-under double barrel shotgun.

Oh and there's also the cocking sound of a pump action shotgun. Absolutely terrifying and highly recognizeable.
