I've been having some upper back pain for about a month now. On June 11th I went to my regular doctor, and she prescribed Flexeril, a muscle relaxant. She told me she was writing the prescription for 3x/day, but only wanted me to take 1x/day. She also told me to follow up if it didn't get better.
Today the pain was particularly bad, so I called Kaiser and made an appointment at after-hours care. After a very long wait in the waiting room, I finally got in to see a doctor. The first thing she did after looking at my chart was scold me (no kidding!) for not following up sooner, even though my doc didn't give me a specific period in which I should follow up. It had only been 3 weeks! Then she said she was going to prescribe an anti-inflammatory. I told her I wanted x-rays or some other test to determine what the problem was, rather than just throwing drugs at it. She asked, "On a Saturday? There's no radiologist here." Her tone suggested that I should have known better... despite having specifically asked about getting an x-ray when I made the appointment, and having been told the facility I was going to would have someone in radiology. Apparently the distinction is that while there was someone there who could take the x-rays, there was not anyone there to actually look at them. We "discuss" for a bit, then she sends me down to radiology to get xrays... of my neck! I go back upstairs and wait for her to look at the xray images, only to have her tell me there's nothing wrong with my neck. Well, duh.. it's back pain, not neck pain. We argue about that for a bit (almost to the point of raised voices) until she finally sends me back to radiology to get x-rays of my back. I have to wait 'til Monday to find out if there's anything wrong, though, and until then I'm gonna be in pain. *grumble*
I hate Kaiser. Thankfully we're switching to Blue Cross/Blue Shield soon, I think.
