I just had a rather negative experience with what was in my opinion a very unprofessional doctor at Kaiser Permanente...

I've been having some upper back pain for about a month now. On June 11th I went to my regular doctor, and she prescribed Flexeril, a muscle relaxant. She told me she was writing the prescription for 3x/day, but only wanted me to take 1x/day. She also told me to follow up if it didn't get better.

Today the pain was particularly bad, so I called Kaiser and made an appointment at after-hours care. After a very long wait in the waiting room, I finally got in to see a doctor. The first thing she did after looking at my chart was scold me (no kidding!) for not following up sooner, even though my doc didn't give me a specific period in which I should follow up. It had only been 3 weeks! Then she said she was going to prescribe an anti-inflammatory. I told her I wanted x-rays or some other test to determine what the problem was, rather than just throwing drugs at it. She asked, "On a Saturday? There's no radiologist here." Her tone suggested that I should have known better... despite having specifically asked about getting an x-ray when I made the appointment, and having been told the facility I was going to would have someone in radiology. Apparently the distinction is that while there was someone there who could take the x-rays, there was not anyone there to actually look at them. We "discuss" for a bit, then she sends me down to radiology to get xrays... of my neck! I go back upstairs and wait for her to look at the xray images, only to have her tell me there's nothing wrong with my neck. Well, duh.. it's back pain, not neck pain. We argue about that for a bit (almost to the point of raised voices) until she finally sends me back to radiology to get x-rays of my back. I have to wait 'til Monday to find out if there's anything wrong, though, and until then I'm gonna be in pain. *grumble*

I hate Kaiser. Thankfully we're switching to Blue Cross/Blue Shield soon, I think.

Jesus Christ. That just outright incompetence on a gross scale. I suggest calling your normal doctor (if this isn't the same person) and have them written up for unprofessional conduct. That's just bullshit.

Was she an actual MD or a "physician's assistant"?

I had Kaiser Rollamente for about 10 years. I can't remember ever seeing an actual (non-specialist) MD.

I think she was an actual MD.

The worst urgent-care experience I've ever had was at Kaiser Falls Church. I'm glad you survived yours -- and if you want to pursue chiropractic care instead, I can refer you to an excellent practice just off Dupont Circle.

Kaiser Falls Church is where this happened. Chiropractic care is not covered, so I can go anywhere I want... We are switching to a different insurance provider in a few months, though, so that might change.

Larry Brown, Dupont Circle Chiropractic, on New Hampshire Ave. It's spitting distance from the south side of the Dupont Metro. The evening can be dangerous for your wallet if you're inclined to go get your adjustment on a nice night, then stroll over to Second Story Books, then head up P Street to Cafe Japon or Pizzeria Paradiso.

Wow, that's awful!
I have a friend who works for Kaiser, you want me to find a "customer care" phone number or email for you?
