Crap gas, crap soda, crap cars, and now crap oil.

"The EPA mandated that for the MY '04 and newer cars and light duty
trucks, that the manufactures must warranty the performance of the cats
for 120K miles. Rather than boost the amount of rare earth metals in
the cats (reversing the trend going back for several years now) the
manufactures decided to require that the sulfur and phosphorous content
in the motor oil be reduced. This is basically why we now have the new
SM rated motor oils.

The only problem on the automotive side of things was that phosphorous
as well as calcium and moly are all great at reducing engine wear. The
formulation changes required to meet the new SM rates has therefore had
some side effects. One of which is that certain brands/weights of motor
oil, namely the so-called "Euro Rated" 0w-30, 0w-40 and 5w-40 weights,
which may have carried such manufacture's certifications as the BMW long
life -01 and MBZ 229.3 anti-wear rating before in their SL formulations,
have been forced to drop some of those certifications in their new
reformulated SM versions.
"

I fucking love this country sometimes. The EPA is really digging at the bottom of the barrel here and the rest of the world is laughing at us.

Can we get any stupider?

well you could use amsoil too :)
i have buddys that import Motul oil by the case too for their TDI's cause the only source for a 505.01 oil is the stealer here in the states. and its only a blend. i think oil standards sould be released by the manifacturer to more than one oil maker. i think they call that.. a monopoly ?

thats the only kind. we have to import it too, usually about 230 dollars for a case (12L) but its worth it. its some of the best oil for our cars.
every where else in the world (but america) uses the 506.01 oil standard for TDI-PD's but here in the states cause of the epa, we have to use an inferior 505.01. bogus.

230 bucks ! holy dog !

we paid something like 7 american dolars per liter. (in argentina 5 years ago before i moved to the US)

There was a motul imported from the US or Mexico. it came in a slightly diferent container and the lavels were almost identical exept from where specifies origin.

MAY be, we have inferior oil, so cars wear faster and you have to use parts, mechanics or buy a new one sooner !

Yes and most other times people are just trying as hard as they can to patch the gaping holes in their 'morality' and 'ethics' ... this is the problem with using predefined concepts to feel justified in what you do rather than deciding for yourself.
