My friend eli_yote has something at the top of his livejournal, that neither of us can identify.  On the right hand side of the browser window, just below his name, appears the string " ...:. :.... .:.....:: ...:. :. :::. : .:.:.."

Anyone know what that might be?

It looks like a visual display of braille (ironic or something, I know) but the two lines are position to be the title and/or subtitle of his journal. http://www.livejournal.com/customize will let him change it.

My first thought was that it might be an coded version of his username, eli_yote, but the first and last characters are not the same.

It could be morse code, with . for dot, and : for dash.. I know that a single dot represents 'e' in morse code, so it's a possibility.

In that case, there are 8 distinct characters up there. But ...-. is not a international morse code character.

What is the paranoia behind this? I just saw it as a bunch of little dots they thre in there for no appearant reason. o.o

As far as I know, unless I logged in while I was sleeping and typed in a code that the governemt installed in my brain, I didn't type it. o.o;

Assuming it wasn't just a random visual element, it isn't:

* Morse code
* Braille
* Baudot
* Binary representation of ASCII

So I'll bite too... what _is_ it? :)

It almost looks like the out-of-focus representation of a right-to-left script-based language of some sort. The HTML source shows it being periods and colons, so the possibility of a mis-render is out...

Heh, bonus points for being the other person on the planet that knows what Baudot is. I still have the tickertape from my old Teletype Model 19 around my "memory box" somewhere....

I think Braille is a 2x3 grid, and since the groupings are uneven and larger than 8, that rules out most coded languages I know of.

Maybe it's a depiction of a night time city skyline full of one- and two-story buildings? :)

Do I get even more bonus points for owning equipment that can -use- Baudot?

~1950's Western Union Teletype equipment, including keyboard (send), printer (Baudot receive), and a home-brewed current-loop to RTTY converter (previous owner).

Free to good home, if you can find someone in/near Philly who wants it and will pick it up.

Net weight is >>200lbs, IIRC.
